pile of cell phones

Hello, Alexander,

I’m writing with some important news regarding a directive from our governor that will impact district policy.

As the new school year approaches, it's important for you to know that we are making a significant change in how we manage the school day. This spring, Governor DeWine directed school districts to develop specific plans to address student cell phone use during school hours. Through our own research, we found that many students were overly engaged with their phones during the school day, generally for non-academic purposes, such as texting, social media, and gaming. In an effort to improve student engagement with classroom activities and improve student learning, we are making changes in accordance with the governor's directive.

Starting this year, students will no longer carry their cell phones with them throughout the day. Upon arriving at school, students must turn off their phones and place them in their lockers. They will retrieve their phones at the end of the school day to take them home. We understand that some students may require exceptions due to medical conditions, and we will work with those students to create appropriate accommodations.

Our plan aligns with the model policy provided by the state of Ohio. Alexander is not alone in adopting this approach; all Athens County schools met earlier this spring and developed similar plans. Each district believes that reducing cell phone distractions will positively impact student learning.

We recognize that parents are concerned about how they will communicate with their children during the school day. Rest assured, you will still be able to reach your child. Every classroom is equipped with a phone, and you can contact the office if you need to get a message to your child.

This is a significant change for all of us, and I appreciate your patience as we adjust. We want each of our students to reach their full potential, and we feel strongly that this change will provide a significant impact on learning. Look for more detailed information coming soon.
