David F. Turrill was born on January 19, 1935 to the late Kenneth and Alberta Brooks Turrill. He was a 1953 graduate of The Plains High School. David was drafted into the Army where he proudly served his country oversees. Upon returning, he married Theresa Poston, the love of his life, in June 1960. She was the daughter of Waldo and Clara Poston who was a graduate of Albany High School. Dave become more of a son to Waldo and Clara and cared for them throughout their lives.

Dave took pride in being a dedicated, loyal, honest, and hard-working person. He was employed at the Pepsi Plant for 28 years and at Elder-Beerman for 8 years. Dave’s wonderful sense of humor was evident when he convinced his children that he served and sang with Elvis Presley in Germany; although, he later revealed that the two did not meet!

Community involvement was an important aspect of Dave’s life. He served with Albany Grange #1611, Albany Fair Board, Alexander Lions Club, and Albany United Methodist Church. Dave instilled his love of life with many traditions his children, all Alexander graduates, continue. His children are D. Michael Turrill, Debra K. Hudnall, Connie J. Sheets, Lori Ann Gutherie, and Jodi L. Rife. Watching his grandchildren participate in football, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, track, and golf provided much enjoyment to Dave. He was a very proud grandfather to Alexander High School graduates Chad and Matthew Sheets; Dana, Jami, and Sean Turrill; Ashley and Andy Hudnall; and Keilee and Kaitlyn Guthrie.

Dave’s love of life was reflected in extensive hobbies shared with family and friends. These included fishing, attending Cincinnati Reds games, celebrating holidays (especially Halloween and Christmas), playing euchre, collecting hats, and vacationing. As a former Plains Indians football and baseball player, he loved all types of athletics. Dave coached Little League and Pony League in Albany, and was very proud of his son’s pitching success. Neighborhood children could count on Dave’s cheering while sitting on his back porch watching the baseball games across the street.

His daughter Connie, an Alexander kindergarten teacher, established this scholarship in Dave’s memory as she wished to remember his love and respect of life, and to further his attributes of hard work, loyalty, honesty, and dedication to future generations. As employees of the district, both Connie and son Chad, continue to support the scholarship and are grateful for the generous donations from fellow staff members.

The David F. Turrill Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student-athlete who is involved in the community or active in the Albany Fair, who emits a strong work ethic and a sense of humor, and who possesses high moral values and love of life.
